Saving kittens. Building community. Finding homes.

Ventura Kitten Rescue is a foster-based nonprofit rescuing vulnerable and at-risk kittens and cats and connecting them with safe, loving homes in Ventura and beyond.

We believe rescue works best when a whole community gets involved.

From pulling kittens facing uncertain outcomes in Southern California shelters to coordinating foster homes, veterinary care, transportation, adoption, and community events, we create another path to safety for cats who need one.

Rescue starts with a place to go.

For a kitten in danger, sometimes the difference between life and death is simply having someone say, “I have room.”

Ventura Kitten Rescue is built around foster care. By moving kittens out of overcrowded or high-intake environments and into homes, we give them the time, medical care, socialization, and stability they need to become healthy, confident companions.

We provide and coordinate:

  • Rescue and shelter transfers
  • Foster placement and support
  • Veterinary care and medications
  • Vaccination and spay/neuter
  • Transportation
  • Socialization and rehabilitation
  • Adoption and permanent placement

Rescue belongs in the community.

We don’t want animal rescue to exist only behind shelter doors.

We want people to encounter it where they already live, walk, create, gather, and spend time.

That means adoption events in local businesses. Partnerships with artists and community organizations. Foster recruitment in our neighborhoods. Educational events. Creative fundraisers. And plenty of opportunities to meet kittens.

Our goal is to make helping animals feel accessible, social, creative, and distinctly Ventura.

More rescue, not more competition.

Ventura County is already home to dedicated shelters, TNR groups, foster organizations, adoption centers, veterinary professionals, volunteers, and advocates doing important work for cats.

We want to work with them.

Ventura Kitten Rescue adds foster and rescue capacity while building connections between the people already doing this work. When one organization has kittens but needs a foster, another has veterinary resources, another has adoption space, and another knows exactly how to help a community-cat colony, collaboration saves more lives.

There is room for all of us in rescue.

A kitten can change a life. So can the person who saves one.

You don’t need to run a rescue to make a difference.

Open your home temporarily. Adopt permanently. Drive a kitten to a veterinary appointment. Donate food or supplies. Sponsor medical care. Volunteer at an event. Share an adoption post. Introduce us to a local business.

Every piece helps create another place for a kitten to land.

About Ventura Kitten Rescue

We started with a simple idea: if we can make room, we can save a life.

Ventura Kitten Rescue is a foster-based nonprofit animal rescue founded in Ventura, California, to create more pathways to safety for vulnerable kittens and cats.

Our work grew from hands-on fostering and rescue and from seeing how quickly an animal’s circumstances can change when someone is able to step in.

Sometimes that means helping kittens here in our own community. Sometimes it means pulling kittens from high-intake Southern California shelters when they are running out of time and bringing them to Ventura, where they can grow up in foster homes instead of shelter kennels.

Whatever the circumstances, our goal is the same:

Get them safe. Get them healthy. Get them home.

Why foster-based rescue?

Physical shelter space will always be limited.

Homes are different.

A network of foster caregivers allows kittens to live in real environments while they receive veterinary care, grow, socialize, and prepare for adoption. Foster families also learn things about each kitten that are difficult to discover in a kennel—whether they love dogs, need another cat, want to sleep on someone’s chest, or would prefer to rule the house from a sunny windowsill.

That helps us make better, more lasting matches.

We also want fostering to be accessible. A person willing to open their home should not necessarily have to personally absorb the cost of saving an animal. As our resources grow, VKR’s goal is to support foster homes with the food, litter, medical care, supplies, and guidance needed to care for their foster animals.

Part of a larger rescue community

Ventura Kitten Rescue did not form because animal rescue wasn’t already happening here.

It formed because more capacity means more animals can be helped.

Ventura County has shelters, cat rescues, community-cat and TNR organizations, adoption organizations, veterinary professionals, foster caregivers, and volunteers already doing extraordinary work.

We see VKR as another piece of that network.

We want to collaborate on foster placement, veterinary resources, TNR referrals, shelter transfers, adoption opportunities, community education, events, and whatever else helps animals move successfully from vulnerability to permanent homes.

When possible, we also rescue at-risk kittens from higher-intake shelters elsewhere in Southern California. Bringing those animals into foster care here creates new opportunities for Ventura residents to foster, volunteer, adopt, and participate directly in lifesaving work.

Rescue can be creative.

We believe animal rescue can be more than intake forms, kennels, and adoption listings.

Ventura has an incredible culture of artists, small businesses, neighborhood spaces, breweries, makers, and people who like doing interesting things together. We want VKR to be part of that.

We envision adoption events that feel like community events. Art and rescue sharing the same space. Neighborhood walks. Local collaborations. Pop-ups. Creative fundraisers. Opportunities for artists working in any medium to participate. Places where someone might come because they love art or their neighborhood and leave having met the kitten they’ll eventually adopt.

Joy is useful in rescue.

A kitten has an extraordinary ability to get strangers talking to one another. We think that’s worth building on.

What we do

Ventura Kitten Rescue works to:

  • Rescue vulnerable, abandoned, orphaned, and at-risk kittens and cats
  • Pull animals from shelters when appropriate and when foster capacity is available
  • Provide safe foster care
  • Coordinate veterinary treatment, vaccines, medications, and spay/neuter
  • Socialize and prepare kittens for successful adoption
  • Match animals with responsible permanent homes
  • Recruit and support foster caregivers and volunteers
  • Collaborate with shelters, rescues, TNR organizations, veterinarians, businesses, artists, and community partners
  • Educate our community about kitten welfare, responsible adoption, spay/neuter, and humane treatment
  • Create welcoming, creative ways for Ventura residents to participate in animal rescue

Our home is Ventura.

We’re proud to be based here.

Our long-term vision is not simply to operate a rescue in Ventura, but to build a rescue that feels like part of Ventura: collaborative, creative, neighbor-driven, compassionate, and willing to try something a little unconventional if it helps an animal find a home.

Because saving kittens takes veterinary care, foster homes, transportation, supplies, adoption families, volunteers, donors, advocates, businesses, artists, neighbors—and sometimes someone willing to carry a kitten into a room full of people and let the kitten do the rest.
